Carnegie Hall Fundraiser
The Summit High School Advanced Orchestra has auditioned for, and has been selected to play at, the National Invitational Band and Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall in April, 2019. This is a tremendous opportunity for the musicians at Summit High School, and a great honor for Fontana Unified School District.
Just 3 years ago, the music program at Summit High School was in disarray. The music director had left early in the fall, and there was no teacher. James Sharp, a then substitute teacher, came in and with support from the parents, students, and administration, he transformed the program. Under his tenure, the orchestra has consistently scored Unanimous Superior ratings at local and regional music festivals. Many of the advanced orchestra students only began playing a string instrument in high school. With Mr. Sharp’s encouragement, now they have advanced their skill level to qualify and play at one of the nation’s most prestigious music venues, Carnegie Hall.
Summit High School is a Title 1 school, with over 66% of its students being socioeconomically disadvantaged. For most of these students, they have never been on a plane or traveled so far. The cost of the trip for 40 musicians and the chaperones will be approximately $100,000. The SkyHawks Music Boosters are fundraising to ensure every student can participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity. This is a great moment for Fontana! We are seeking donations and support from our local businesses. We are a 501(c)(3) charity organization and all donations are tax-deductible. Please consider supporting the Summit Advanced Orchestra. Donations may be sent to the school or by clicking below.
Thank you so much for your support of Fontana’s best and brightest young musicians as they truly reach for the stars!
